It looks like the X-Man is there to stay in Boston as he just signed a 6-year extension worth $120 million with the Red Sox. Bogaerts has been a reliable player since he started with the Red Sox back in 2013. He was in a limited role in his first year and emerged as the starting Shortstop in 2014. He has won the Silver Slugger award twice and was also voted an All-star in 2016.

Bogaerts has never been the guy to light up the stat sheet but he has been a consistent threat who has improved his game over the last few years to help him receive this contract extension. He had career highs in doubles, home runs, and RBI's in 2018 and had his second-lowest strikeout total in that same season. It has shown that Alex Cora has helped his development and will continue his development over the coming years.

Many believed that Xander would be the odd man out in Boston due to the contracts of J.D Martinez and Mookie Betts. Martinez can opt-out after this season and Betts's contract is up at the end of the 2020 season. Most media members and those close to the team believe they will only re-sign two of those three players and one of them, Xander Bogaerts, just signed his extension. This could spell bad news for Red Sox fans as the team could be preparing for the departure of Mookie Betts.

Martinez will likely opt-out of his contract as he could garnish more money on the open market, like what we saw happen with Manny Machado and Bryce Harper but the belief is he will be back in Boston, whether that be he opts-in to his current contract or opts-out to make a new deal with the Red Sox. Sadly, the same cannot be said for Mookie Betts.

The Xander Bogaerts signing spells heartbreak for Red Sox fans who love Mookie Betts. The team has been trying to work a deal with Betts for a while now and nothing has come to fruition. This Xander signing could mean that the team feels they do not have a shot at Mookie and he will end up in a different uniform after the 2020 season. While it is a happy day in Boston with Boegarts re-signing, it could be a gloomy day come the end of the 2020 season when Mookie Betts plays his final game in a Red Sox uniform.
