Finally. The 2019 NFL Draft kicked off Thursday night from Nashville with raucous crowd of roughly 300,000 on hand. Former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle wondered why anyone would want to watch the NFL draft. He got his answer with Round 1 of this year's selection show. Here's who won and who lost after the first day of the 2019 draft.
The Redskins picked up Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins, a strong-armed prototype NFL thrower, to shore up Washington's quarterback situation. The Redskins signed Case Keenum in the offseason as insurance against a failed Alex Smith comeback. Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury last season and will be 35 next month.
LOSER: Giants Fans
A collective gasp was let out by New York Giants fans in Nashville. GM Dave Gettleman used the franchise's first pick on Duke QB Daniel Jones. Jones has average arm strength and struggled with accuracy and decision-making as a Blue Devil. While some saw Jones as a first-round pick, no one saw him going this high.
WINNER: Oklahoma & Lincoln Riley
For the second consecutive season, Oklahoma produced the draft's No. overall pick. This year, it was Kyler Murray who was taken by the Arizona Cardinals. Murray and last year's No. 1 Baker Mayfield mark the first time in NFL draft history that quarterbacks from the same school were taken first overall.
LOSER: Josh Rosen
The Cardinals drafted Murray with the first pick of the draft. Arizona used its first pick last year on Rosen, who many thought would be traded. It appeared the Cardinals tried to deal Rosen, but there were no takers. From first-round draft pick and rookie starter to potential backup? What a difference a year makes.
WINNERS: Defensive Linemen
The NFL is a quarterback-driven league, but it was defensive linemen that took center stage on Day 1 of the draft. A total of 12 defensive linemen were taken in the first round. Those who chase the quarterback were in such high demand that after Murray was picked first the next three picks were DE Nick Bosa (San Francisco), DT Quinnen Williams (NY Jets), and Clelin Ferrell (Oakland).
LOSERS: Ole Miss WRs
D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown were supposed to be first-round NFL draft picks. Both are physical specimens. Brown is a shade over 6-feet and weighs in a 226 poiunds. He ran 4.49 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 36.5-inch vertical jump. Metcalf was even more freakish at 6-3 and 228 pounds. He posted a ridiculous 4.33 in the 40 and a picture of his shredded physique has gone viral. Pictures, physiques, and 40-yard dashes don't get you drafted though. Neither Brown nor Metcalf was selected in the first round.
