Free Agency is always a time for teams to bring in high level and experienced talent, and this years’ group of free agent safeties has plenty to offer.
Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro, Lamarcus Joyner, and Jimmie Ward are just a couple of the names that are going to be free agent safeties following the 2018-19 season. The safety class is clearly loaded, but we zoom in even further, and have narrowed down the list to the top three safeties that are up for grabs, and where they are most likely going to be playing next year.
Number Three : Landon Collins
Number three on the list of safeties set to be free agents in 2019 is Landon Collins. Collins is an explosive safety who is set to have a shot at the free agency market after the Giants registered another shaky season. Collins has been the best player on his New York defense, and would offer a physical presence who is solid against the run and in pass coverage.
Collins has been linked to multiple teams, with the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers planning on making influential offers to the safety, with Collins expected to become of of the highest paid safeties in the league.
Number Two : Earl Thomas
Earl Thomas comes in at number two on our list, offering a high quality safety to any team who can acquire his services this offseason. Thomas was injured early in the 2018-19 season, but he is known throughout the league as one of the sharpest safeties in the league. Thomas offers tremendous long-ball coverage over the top, as well as a high football IQ that benefits his game. Thomas has solid run defense, but has the ability to make a good pass defense into a great one.
Number One : Tyrann Mathieu
Tyrann Mathieu comes in at the number one spot on our list of most talented free agent safeties. Mathieu, unlike Earl Thomas and Landon Collins, is actually healthy. In fact, Mathieu has proven to be very durable, starting 16 games for the second season in a row. Mathieu has started more than 13 games in every year of his career except one (2016-17, started 10).
On top of his durability, Mathieu has proven that he can consistently impact a game. Mathieu compiled 89 tackles this season, among the top 10 from the safety position.
If your team needs a safety this offseason, look for one of these players to fill the hole. The free agent pool for safeties is incredibly deep this year.
