The New York Knicks have dealt there most valuable asset. On Thursday, the Knicks and Mavericks finalized a trade that sees Porzingis and three other teammates landing in Dallas in exchange for point guard Dennis Smith Jr. and two first-round draft picks in the future, with the trade outlined below.

Mavericks Receive :

Kristaps Porzingis (Forward)

Tim Hardaway Jr. (Guard)

Trey Burke (Guard)

Courtney Lee (Guard)

Knicks Receive :

Dennis Smith Jr. (Guard)

DeAndre Jordan (Center)

Wesley Matthews (Guard)

First-round draft pick (2021)

First-round draft pick (2023)

On paper, this is a move that makes the Mavericks better now, and makes the Knicks better in the summer of 2019. New York is currently 10-40, and will likely land a top 3 draft pick again this season. After moving out four players in the Porzingis dead, the Knicks will have a league-leading $71 million open salary cap for the summer, making it possible to add two max contract players to the payroll in 2019.

The Knicks decided to make this move after a meeting with Porzingis and the front office. The meeting was reported to be about the future of Porzingis, with the 7’3 Latvian expressing his disinterest in being a part of the New York organization going forward. Knicks team president Steve Mills remarked that Porzingis seemed uninterested in staying in New York, saying that Porzingis lacked “buy-in”. Porzingis has expressed his desire to play for a winning, competing franchise, something that the New York Knicks can’t offer at the moment.

After the trade, the Mavericks will have to transition as well. Dallas made the bold move of trading away 3 of their 5 starters for an injured Porzingis. In doing so, they were able to unite young European talents Luka Doncic and Porzingis. Doncic is averaging 20.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in his rookie season, making the Mavs must-watch basketball when Porzingis is finally healthy and playing.
