ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that Knicks All Star Kristaps Porzingis is likely to be traded by the deadline on February 7th.

The news comes after Porzingis met with the Knicks front office about his future with the team. It was reported that the two parties seemed to disagree about the direction of the franchise and the player. Porzingis is currently out with an ACL injury, and is set to become a free agent after this season.

Porzingis is rumored to desire a trade, as he wants to play for a team who is contending in the postseason, something the Knicks don’t look like they will be doing for a while. The San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, and Los Angeles Clippers are rumored to be interested in acquiring Porzingis before the deadline date. The Spurs have been heavily linked, with San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich looking to add more scoring to his Spurs roster.

Porzingis is coming off of his best year as a Knick, averaging 22.7 points and 6.6 rebounds in his third year in the league last season. With an asset as valuable as this one, the Knicks will not want to let Porzingis leave for nothing at the end of the season. Porzingis has been unwilling to commit to a long term stay in New York, and for good reason. The Knicks have been irrelevant on the NBA scene for some time now, and are currently 10-40. The Knicks need to rebuild, and with Porzingis refusing to commit to being the piece of the future, New York is now forced to trade their most valuable asset. Look for the Knicks to acquire many expiring contracts and draft picks in exchange for Porzingis, as New York looks to summer 2019 as the time to start yet another rebuild.
