The New York Knicks enter with a 10-47 record, worst in the NBA. They are just 6-24 on the road and have lost 18 consecutive games, dating back to January 4. Although taking to the road, they have a shot to end the skid against the Hawks, who are just 19-38 on the season and 9-16 at home. The Knicks won the last meeting between the teams, but the Hawks have taken two of three this season.
Examining the teams statistically, the Knicks are near the bottom in points scored and allowed, while in the bottom third in rebounding. The one area they have been surprising good at is taking care of the ball, ranked ninth in fewest turnovers. Atlanta is slightly below the middle of the pack in scoring and rebounding, however they are dead last in fewest points allowed and turnovers.
The Knicks are lead by Emmanuel Mediay, who is averaging 14.7 points per game. However, he has been out with a shoulder injury. Dennis Smith Jr (13.5 points) and rookie Kevin Knox (12.6 points) are the best candidates to pick up the slack. Recently acquired DeAndre Jordan is averaging 11.2 points and has been stellar on the boards, at 11.8 per game. Noah Vonleh has also been very solid on the boards, averaging 8.2 per game. Allonzo Trier (9.8 points), Kadeem Allen (9.3 points) and Mario Hezonja (7.8 points) are solid young players, however the Knicks are clearly lacking a big time scoring threat.
Atlanta has a bit more firepower offensively, lead by John Collins, averaging 19.4 points per game. Trae Young adds 16.9, while dishing out nearly ten assists per contest, while veteran Kent Bazemore adds 13 per night. Taurean Prince (13.4 points), DeWayne Dedmon (10.3 points, 7.1 rebounds), Kevin Huerter (9.4 points) and 42-year old Vince Carter (6.6 points) each hit nearly 40 percet from beyond the arc.
While the Hawks are far from a powerhouse, they have significantly more experience and better top of the line players. The Knicks will stay competitive for some time. They will eventually win again this season, however it will wait until after the All-Star break. The Hawks will pull ahead in the fourth quarter to win and enter the break on a positive note.
