CBS Sports has reported on Toronto Raptors Star forward Kawhi Leonard and his purchase of a $13.4 million dollar property located in Southern California, sparking debate on exactly where Kawhi Leonard will be playing his basketball come next season.
Leonard has the player option stipulated in his contact, and could choose to opt out of his current contract after the 2018-19 season, and many expect him to do so. Opting out of the contract would make him a free agent, allowing him to listen to other teams’ offers, while also reserving the Raptors the right to offer him the most money (Max deal - 5 year, $190 Million). Many experts have speculated that Leonard may not see himself in Toronto next year, despite the success the Raptors are having this season.
Before being traded to the Raptors last season, Kawhi was linked to many teams, including the LA Lakers and the Clippers in Los Angeles. Now it would appear as if one of these two teams could land Kawhi this offseason, with the Lakers rumored to be in the market for a superstar. It’s no secret that LA was chasing Anthony Davis, but New Orleans seems to have made it clear that Davis is not going anywhere, for this season at least.
With LeBron James turning 34 last month, the Lakers are going to have to win immediately if they want to realistically win Championships with James. Leonard is averaging a career high 27.8 points, and is still considered one of the best on ball defenders in the league. With Davis out of the picture, Leonard would appear to be the most talented player available, and most certainly a player that puts the Lakers into title contention with a healthy roster.
Look for this saga to continue until Leonard makes a concrete statement about his future.
