Anthony Davis has been the biggest name in the trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline. Davis has been heavily linked to a move to LA, but the move might take longer than the LA Lakers would like.
Despite having tradable assets, it seems as if LA doesn’t have enough to persuade the Pelicans to trade Anthony Davis, making the situation more difficult to navigate. Davis is under contract until after the 2019-2020 season, making it an ideal time to listen to trades if you are New Orleans. Reports have suggested that the Pelicans may decide to wait until the summer to listen to offers. In doing so, they would allow teams like the Celtics and Lakers to have the opportunity to move contracts and money around, making it easier to make an attractive offer.
Although the Celtics and Lakers have been the most rumored teams, there have been darkhorse candidates that have appeared since Davis announced his trade request. The New York Knicks are looking to turn the corner on their return to relevance, and could use a Superstar name like Anthony Davis. The Knicks will have a high first round draft pick, and are willing to move injured All Star Kristaps Porzingis. These two assets together may be enough to pry Davis away from New Orleans, even if it is just for a season and a half.
The Pelicans have finally responded to the rumors, coming out with a public statement,
“Although we are disappointed in this decision, our organization’s top priority is to bring an NBA championship to our city and fans and build our team for long-term success,”
It looks like it is just a matter of time before Davis is on the move. It’ll be interesting to see what team bid will win the Anthony Davis sweepstakes.
