The LA Chargers lost to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots Sunday, kicking off the beginning of the offseason for the Chargers. Most of the main pieces of this LA team are under contract until the end of next season at least.

The offseason does offer some controversy, with influential players like Jason Verrett and Tyrell Williams in line to run out their contract. Both are likely to be offered new deals, with Verrett expected to take his LA offer. Cornerback Jason Verrett has been a mainstay in the LA secondary when he is healthy, something he hasn’t been able to be. Verrett has only played in more than 6 games in one season of his career, hurting his free agency value.

Wide receiver Tyrell Williams is reported to have a desire to test his value in the free agency market. Tyrell Williams had been overshadowed by 2nd year wideout Mike Williams this season, and sees his future in doubt in LA.

With few departures, LA can focus on using the free agency market to improve. On offense, the Chargers are fairly well balanced. Vet Philip Rivers has led this team for over a decade, and will be content with the weapons he has at his disposal going into next year. Keenan Allen is a legit go-to wideout, and Mike Williams is a solid number two. Running back Melvin Gordon has been consistent, but his offensive line could use some improvement. Look for LA to target guard Mark Glowinski to be linked with LA. Glowinski has just played his last game under contract, and will be listening to offers, with LA able to offer a stable offense to build upon.

Defensively, the Chargers were up and down. With a pass rush lead by Joey Bosa, LA was successful against the aerial attack this year. The secondary for the Chargers held up, but the defense lacked a physical presence. LA had a hard time stopping the run all season, which should prompt the front office to pursue interior linemen on the defensive side. Ndamukong Suh could offer the perfect upgrade, with the DT becoming a free agent at the end of his 2018-19 season. Suh would offer protection against the run, as well as bouldster a pass rush that is already one of the best in the league.
