A Look Back At Mahomes Marvelous Season


When Rex Burkhead ran in the game winning touchdown in overtime on Sunday, it ended the season of the Chiefs, and with it, the season of quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. Mahomes led the league’s most statistically explosive offense, leading the lead in scoring and yardage. Mahomes is the favorite to win the MVP, and at only 23, the sky's the limit for his future.

In only his second season in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes was able to throw for 5,081 yards and 50 TD with just 13 INT. Mahomes was also efficient on the ground, using his elusiveness to rack up 272 rush yards and 2 TD on the ground. All around, Mahomes was the best player in the league. Today, we take a look at his top 3 performances during his breakout season.

  1. AFC Championship - Chiefs 31 - Patriots 37

Mahomes : 16-31, 295 Yards, 3 TD 0 INT

Despite losing in the AFC Championship, Mahomes was able to put Kansas City in a position to beat the dynasty that is the New England Patriots. If Kansas City would have won the coin toss, there is a good chance that we would be seeing a Chiefs v. LA Rams Super Bowl, a rematch of the high scoring Week 11 matchup. Mahomes and the Chiefs offense were never able to reach the field in overtime, with Brady and the Pats scoring a touchdown with the first possession.

Mahomes was safe with the ball all night, and was urgent when it mattered. Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field twice late in the fourth quarter at incredible pace, moving the ball 40+ yards in under 30 seconds to put KC in field goal range, sending the game to overtime. In his first AFC Championship, Mahomes was cool, calm and collected. Look for he and the Chiefs to make another postseason run next season.

  1.  Week 11 - Chiefs 51 - Rams 54

Mahomes : 33-46, 478 Yards, 6 TD 3 INT

For a second time in the top 3 countdown, one of Mahomes best performances was in a loss. Mahomes was able to move the ball through through the air all night, finding Tyreek Hill 10 times for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kelce chipped in 10 catches of his own, registering 127 receiving yards with a touchdown. Even though the Kansas City defense was nowhere to be found, this was one the the best performances by Mahomes all season.

  1. Week 2 - Chiefs 42 - Steelers 37

Mahomes : 23-28, 326 Yards, 6 TD 0 INT

Mahomes put the league on high alert early in the season. After throwing for 4 TD in a week 1 win, Mahomes then went to Pittsburgh and had his best game of the season. In only week 2. Mahomes went off, only throwing 5 incomplete passes the whole game. He had 3 of his 6 TD in the first quarter, and had three more in the second half, tying the Kansas City franchise record with 6 TD in one game.
