Collins has retained a contract offer worth $84 million over 6 years, including a $15 million signing bonus that will be paid out after officially signing the contract on March 14th.
The news, broken by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, will not bring a smile to Giant's fans faces. New York will now see their former star defensive safety at least twice a year, as their NFC East rivals were able to scoop one of the most sought after safeties of the free agency market. At just 25 years old, many considered Landon Collins to be the most valuable free agent up for grabs this year. The safety has been among the elite at his position in hist first four seasons, averaging well over 100 tackles per season. Collins has 428 tackles and eight interceptions in his young four season career, making three Pro Bowl appearances and the 2016 First Team All-Pro team along the way.
Landon Collins will slide right into the strong safety position of the 3-4 defense in Washington. His explosiveness and run support will help improve on the Redskins defense, who ended last season as the 17th best defense in the NFL. Landon Collins will join Josh Norman and Mason Foster as the leaders of an up-and-coming defensive unit in Washington, as the Redskins are slowly starting to piece together a respectable defense.
With Collins off of the free agency market, the safeties that are still available are likely to prosper from this lucrative deal. Expect big money for Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, and other free agent safeties in this year’s NFL offseason.
